Independent studies have measured what Google answering first costs in clicks, what being cited in that answer returns, and how quickly the set of cited sites is turning over.
Clicks fall when an Overview appears
Seer Interactive compared 3,119 queries across 25 million impressions. Where Google showed an AI Overview, organic click-through ran 61% lower than on the same queries without one.
A #1 position under an Overview is not the #1 it used to be.
Cited brands out-click the uncited
In the same study, brands cited inside the AI Overview earned 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands that were not, on the same queries.
The Overview is not where clicks end. It is where they are decided.
Ranking buys less of the Overview each month
Ahrefs followed 863,000 search result pages. The share of AI Overview citations held by the organic top ten fell from 76% to 38% in seven months.

What is a Google AI Overview?
A Google AI Overview is the AI-written answer Google shows above the ordinary results on some searches, with a panel of linked sources beside it. Google decides per query and per run whether one appears. When it does, the sites it cites and the rankings underneath it see very different click-through, which is why being cited in it matters.
Does RankX AI track AI Overviews separately from ChatGPT and the other assistants?
Yes, and they never mix. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity are checked by a nightly prompt run against the prompts you track. Google AI Overviews are read by the rank tracker against the keywords you track, with every rank check, by market and device. Two pipelines, two units of measurement, reported side by side and never averaged together.
Do I have to rank on page one to be cited in an AI Overview?
Ranking helps, and it is less of a guarantee every month. Why does AI Overview presence change between checks?
Because Google changes it. The same keyword can show an AI Overview on one run and none on the next, and presence also differs by market and by device. RankX AI records presence per check rather than declaring that a keyword has or does not have an Overview, and when an Overview is detected but cannot be captured, the verdict is recorded as unknown rather than as not cited. The trend across checks is the number worth acting on.
Can I see which domains Google cites instead of me?

Does blocking AI crawlers affect Google AI Overviews?
No. AI Overviews are built from Google's ordinary search index, crawled by Googlebot, so blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot or the other AI crawlers does not touch them. Even Google-Extended controls Gemini, not AI Overviews. What does limit them are the same controls that limit snippets: nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. Block those and you are opting out of the answer box on your own queries.
